Integration (30 mins):
Use this fictional scenario to help students practice porosity, applying what they are learning to the world outside of academia. Your role is to guide the students through the exercise and assign the role of the mole. Start the session by finding a way to assign the mole. For example, you could hand everyone a post-it where all the roles bar one are ‘advisor’ and one role is the ‘mole’, or you could ask everyone to open their Teams app and you could message the mole directly on Teams.
Setting the scene (5 mins):
Your group has been hired to advise the founders of a budding tech company that wants to revolutionise the knowledge economy. The two founders have a background in computer engineering and philosophy. A year into building their product, they received an acquisition offer from Google for £2 billion. They currently own 90% of the company and want to ensure their product remains accessible and benefits the global population and the planet. They have requested your interdisciplinary insight on whether they should go ahead with the acquisition or continue building independently. The only thing the company is allowed to share is that their technology democratises information.
The twist: Someone in the group is a mole and works for Google's M&A (mergers and acquisitions) team. The mole attempts to remain balanced, but steers the group in favour of an acquisition, even if the evidence suggests it’s not the ideal outcome
The task (25 mins):
Using your knowledge from your modules so far, advise the founders on:
- the potential consequences and impact of accepting the offer (positive and negative)
- what decision they should take
Next steps (10 mins):
Presentation & Debrief :
- Present your findings back to the coach
- Get feedback
- Guess the mole
Tracking Outcomes (10 mins):
