3. Immerse yourselves in the LIS “PREP culture” and chart clear goals for the month ahead with mutual support and determination.
Presence
Understanding Coaching in LIS MASc:
In the LIS MASc program, coaching means a dedicated faculty member, professional, or a current student collaboratively guides a small group of around five students to nurture and enhance their skills in three vital areas:
- Integration: Fostering the ability to integrate knowledge and perspectives from diverse disciplines.
- Achievable Goal-Setting: Empowering students to set and attain meaningful goals effectively.
- Effective Interdisciplinary Teamwork: Cultivating the skills needed to excel within interdisciplinary teams.
Getting to Know Each Other from Various Angles (15 mins):
During this segment, the facilitator invites each team member to introduce themselves in a concise 2-minute presentation. They are encouraged to share at least one intriguing fact that might surprise their audience.
The introduction should encompass a blend of personal, professional, and academic details, enabling the group to create a dynamic "3D picture" of their fellow members from diverse perspectives using a Miro board. This "3D picture" can be continuously updated by any group member as the course progresses to incorporate fresh insights into their colleagues' multifaceted identities.
Integration
Introducing the PINTO method
Introducing the PINTO “dive” method to the group (5 mins):
- P, Presence - creates an environment of reflection at the start of the session to bring everyone into the present moment
- I, Integration - facilitates academic/interpersonal connection building, personal development, intellectual curiosity, and academic depth
- N, Next steps - explores what each person and the group can do to take their academic and interpersonal learning to the next level
- TO, Track Outcomes - invites the individual/group to set actionable and trackable academic and personal goals
The facilitator invites the group to add their doubts or concerns to the “Questions & concerns park” area in Miro.
“Cracking the code” Integration session (20 mins):
Encourage the group to engage in a discussion about their experiences in learning how to code and explore the potential applications of this new skill within the context of their existing disciplinary backgrounds and their capstone projects.
Questions (15 mins):
- Reflect on what has worked effectively in your coding journey over the past week, and share valuable tips for those who might be facing challenges.
- How are you thinking about bringing together different kinds of knowledge in your capstone project?
- What is your capstone project idea and how do you imagine that “cracking the code” could be applied to it?
Additional prompts: — If you had no constraints, how would you communicate your final capstone project? — Consider the impact you aim to achieve through your project. What transformation do you aspire to bring about?
